Microsoft’s launch of social phone acknowledges power of social web

The power of the social web to set trends, affect SEO and deliver targeted traffic to a website is acknowledged by the fact that Microsoft has considered it important enough to launch a product specifically aimed at its users. Considering the fact that Microsoft, these days, is desperate when it comes to getting even a toehold in the non-corporate web its latest foray, attended by all the costs associated with developing, testing and then marketing a new product is a sure sign of the social web’s maturity in the importance stakes.

The social phone is one of those devices which make more sense on corporate development project sheets than they do in real life and, in term of practicality, I think by appealing to those who want more of a traditional phone and less of a smartphone it manages to fall between two stools.

Yet, in developing, Microsoft obviously wanted to avoid taking head-on Blackberry, the iPhone and Google’s own Android phone and, at the same time, was hoping to carve a niche which leveraged the new phenomenon.

It is here that we must focus because the ability of the social web to start and maintain trends, shape opinion and influence outcome is something which has internet marketers, political activists, advertisers, webmasters and search engine optimizers standing to attention. This is one ‘trend’ which will not easily go away and which has undeniable influence, provided we understand how to tap its potential.
