When you have a website you are, constantly, seeking shortcuts which will help you get ranked higher in search engines. I receive many emails asking me to explain how PageRank works hoping that what is really missing from them dominating the front page of Google with their website is a rise of one or two points to PageRank (PR).
Well, they are wrong! PageRank (PR) used to be important prior to 2007 and then, indeed, a site which had a high PR would beat a site with a lower PR without question. Since Google’s sensitization of its algorithmic assessment of a website, however, it split Pagerank (PR) into two with a public version which gets updated every three or four months and an internal one which gets updated daily.
The latter is the reason why websites can fluctuate in Google’s index and pages can rise or drop in response to the search result queries. Google’s Matt Cutts explains how PageRank works in the video below.
