HelpMySEO gets a lot of visits from web developers looking to add SEO to their skills and create more business opportunities for themselves. This morning I received an email which was as pithy as it was heartfelt:
I am a website and graphic designer. Clients have been asking me to do SEO for their sites, including blogs, because they need them in the top ranks of Google to be visible. How can I improve my SEO skills so I can market myself as an expert and generate more business? TM, São Paulo, Brazil.

The good news here is that SEO is an entirely learnable discipline and I am living proof of that. The bad news is that because no information ever vanishes from the web there is a lot of out-of-date or simply wrong information on SEO floating about on the web.
Experienced SEOs have no problem sorting out the good from the bad but newbies obviously can’t and learning on the job can quickly become an expensive exercise which costs you clients and your professional reputation.
There are solutions to this problem, of course. If you are really new to this then SEO Help will be ideal for you. This is a practical guide which really works. The steps can be applied to any website. The techniques are language independent and it will give you your first grounding on what is needed in order to get a website to be visible on the web.
If you need a little more help with your SEO then Brilliant Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is perfect for you. Although still aimed at the newbie it has a step-by-step visual guide to taking all the steps you need to get you a little further. At the time of writing this the book is out in June and it is pre-selling hotly on Amazon at the moment.
One of the things which became apparent very quickly was that after SEO Help was published there were still many questions being asked by self-taught SEOs who needed to know where to go next and how to apply it. This is perfectly understandable. No book can cover everything and SEO Help was always intended to be a starting point.
This is the reason I put in a lot of time and effort in creating SEO Tips which are practical and the practical application of what I say and its impact on SEO is also the guiding principle behind what I place on Google News and Social Media News - with the occasional exception of my Blog where I also post pieces which simply catch my attention or ask questions which have been raised in my mind, everything else published here has a practical bias. The intention is you read it, take it away with you and apply it to your online business.
SEO, these days, is closely integrated with online marketing and Online Marketing Help is a book which provides the tools you need to have in order to correctly use the real-time web for marketing and gives insights on how to do it. If, like the person who sent me the email above, you are looking to increase your SEO skills you will have to, sooner or later, check out Online Marketing Help but it should not be your first point of call.
If you need to know how to market your website more effectively using social network practices then Online Marketing Help will prove more useful but you still need to make sure your SEO is where it should be.
To make it easier to stay in touch with current developments in the SEO and online marketing fields I provide a Newsletter you could sign up to and an RSS Feed as well as email notifications. All of this is free and always will be.
In addition, should you ever need to check something on a particular aspect of SEO which you feel you need help with really quickly then just get in touch with me. Although I am busy I also am open with my help and advice. I got to where I am because others, before me, were equally helpful and kind to me and I believe in passing it forward wherever I can.

Common sense is a terrible demon. It has a way of insidiously whispering in our ear, telling us that the things we logically believe to be true, actually are and therefore there is no need to spend time and effort...
